Custom BJJ Gi Manufacturer: How to Design Your Team’s Kimono

A custom BJJ Gi manufacturer for academies and competition teams is best produced in Sialkot, Pakistan, where the global hub for combat sports apparel operates. MOQ for fully custom gis starts at 15 units, weave options include 350, 450, and 550 GSM pearl weave, sampling takes 14 to 21 days, and bulk production takes 35 to 50 days. A quality custom gi costs between 38 and 75 USD per piece at factory FOB. The design process covers weave, cut, embroidery, sublimated patches and IBJJF compliance.

What "Custom" Actually Means in BJJ Gi Production

Most apparel suppliers sell three different things under the same word. Understanding the difference saves teams from getting a generic Gi with a logo sticker.

  • Stock Gi with patches: The supplier adds your team patches to an existing white or blue Gi. Cheap and fast, but limited identity.
  • Stock cut with custom embroidery and patches: Same Gi shape, your contrast stitching, your patches, your collar piping.
  • Fully custom Gi: Built to your specification on weave, GSM, colour, cut, collar height, sleeve length, vent style, sizing and full sublimation inner panel.

Bij Shapes Fightwear, we build fully custom Gis from scratch for academies, brands, and competition teams across more than 30 countries. The guide below walks through the choices you make at each stage.

Step 1: Choose the Weave

Parelweefsel

The default modern Gi weave. Lighter than single weave, more durable than gold weave, and IBJJF approved for competition. Available in 350, 450, and 550 GSM. Most academies select 450 GSM for daily training because it balances weight, durability, and grip resistance.

Kristalweefsel

A heavier traditional weave with a tighter knit. Lasts longer but feels stiffer in the first 30 wash cycles. Preferred by some old school players and instructors who want a Gi that looks formal on the mat.

Ripstop

A reinforced weave used in the pants and sometimes the jacket. Lighter, dries faster, and resists rips at high stress points. Many academies pair a pearl weave jacket with ripstop pants for the best balance.

Enkelvoudig geweven

The original BJJ weave. Lighter and cheaper than pearl, but wears out faster under heavy training loads. Suitable for warm climates and competition only Gis.

Step 2: Pick the GSM Weight

GSMGebruiksvoorbeeldKlimaatLifespan in Daily Training
350Competition, summer trainingWarm en vochtig12 to 18 months
450Dagelijkse training, allroundGematigd2 to 3 years
550Heavy training, cold climateKoud en droog3 to 5 years

For most academies a 450 GSM pearl weave jacket with ripstop pants is the right starting point. Competition teams often order a second lighter Gi at 350 GSM that sits inside IBJJF weight limits.

Step 3: Design the Cut and Fit

The cut is what separates a great Gi from a generic one. Six measurements need to be set on the tech pack.

  • Jacket length: Standard ranges from A1 at 72 cm to A4 at 95 cm.
  • Sleeve length: IBJJF rule requires sleeves to reach within 5 cm of the wrist when extended.
  • Collar height: 4 cm is standard. Wider collars resist collar chokes better but add weight.
  • Skirt cut: Straight cut for traditional style or tapered cut for modern competition.
  • Vents: Side vents at the hem improve mobility for guard play.
  • Pants rise: Standard 28 to 32 cm crotch rise depending on size.

If your team includes a wide range of body shapes consider offering both A series sizes for taller athletes and F series sizes for shorter athletes. The full size grid is available on our BJJ Gi size chart.

Step 4: Choose Colour and Branding Elements

Base Colours

White, blue, and black are IBJJF approved for competition. Other colours are allowed at most no-gi tournaments and at non-IBJJF events. Custom dye lots can match Pantone codes inside a small variance.

Patches and Sublimation

Embroidered patches are durable and traditional. Sublimated patches allow full colour artwork including gradients and photo realistic logos. We recommend a mix: embroidery on collar and chest, sublimation on shoulder and pant panels.

Contrasterende stiksels

Contrast thread on lapel, sleeve cuff, and pant hem adds identity without breaking IBJJF rules.

Step 5: Confirm IBJJF Compliance Before Production

If any athletes on the team plan to compete in IBJJF tournaments the Gi must meet the federation rule book. Three rules trip up custom Gi orders most often.

  1. The cuff opening must allow a 7 cm wide measuring stick to slide along the length of the sleeve.
  2. Patches outside the approved zones lead to disqualification at weigh in.
  3. Coloured Gis must be uniform without contrasting panels except in allowed zones.

Read the latest IBJJF approved Gi specifications on the IBJJF official site before signing off the tech pack.

Common Mistakes Academies Make on First Custom Orders

Common Mistakes Academies Make on First Custom Orders
  • Ordering only one fit sample then committing to a large size run. Order at least three sizes for fit confirmation.
  • Choosing the cheapest patch process. Heat transfer patches peel inside 20 wash cycles. Always go embroidery or sublimation.
  • Skipping the contrast stitching review. Thread colour shifts slightly in production. Lock the Pantone code in writing.
  • Ignoring shrinkage. Cotton Gis shrink 2 to 4 percent on the first hot wash. Order one size up if athletes prefer hot machine wash.
  • No buffer stock. Always order 10 to 15 percent above expected demand to cover new joiners through the year.

Veelgestelde vragen

What is the minimum order quantity for a custom BJJ Gi?

MOQ for a fully custom BJJ Gi starts at 15 to 50 pieces per design. Smaller runs are possible for stock cuts with custom patches and embroidery. Larger volumes from 200 pieces upward unlock better per unit pricing.

How long does it take to receive a custom Gi order?

Sampling takes 10 to 21 days. Bulk production takes 35 to 65 days depending on volume. Sea freight from Sialkot to Europe or USA takes 28 to 35 days. Air freight reduces transit to 5 to 7 days.

What weave should I choose for an academy Gi?

450 GSM pearl weave is the standard daily training choice. It balances weight, durability and comfort. Heavier 550 GSM suits cold climates and competitive training. Lighter 350 GSM suits hot climates and competition use.

Are custom Gis IBJJF approved?

Yes if they meet IBJJF specifications on weave, colour, patch placement, and measurement tolerances. We ship every custom academy Gi with IBJJF compliance in mind unless the client requests a non-IBJJF spec.

Can I get full sublimation on my custom BJJ Gi?

Yes. Full sublimation works on synthetic blend Gis and on dedicated competition Gis. Full cotton pearl weave does not accept full sublimation directly but can carry large sublimated panels in approved zones.

What payment terms do you accept for custom orders?

Standard terms are 30 to 50 percent advance against Pro Forma Invoice and the balance against shipping documents. We accept bank transfer, Letter of Credit for orders above 25,000 USD, and escrow services for first time buyers.
